Its nearly the end of the first month of 2015 and it is shaping up to be an exciting year for the motor industry especially with the constant development on the technology surrounding the next big thing, which it would seem, is cars that don’t need drivers Mercedes have already made a splash in this area with its F015 concept. But what were my favourite Mercedes moments of 2014?
One thing that got me particularly excited was the 2014 facelift of the Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG performance car though my reasons aren’t exactly that interesting, but it was the first time I can remember a Mercedes Benz car being released with a ballsy paint job.
Second is another Mercedes Benz I’m afraid, this time however it was introduced to us with the good old silver paint job, though that was probably pretty fitting as the primary selling point of the Mercedes Benz GLA was practicality and it had no real business being flash. The GLA is a crossover based on the A-Class but it looks better and is actually more practical.
I was reminiscing earlier about all the different cars I have had love affairs with over the years. Many of them, despite changing as the years went by, are still around today. But there was one that is no more, and this fact saddened me. If you havn’t guessed from the title, I am referring to the BMW 8 Series. This is a car that I hold in particularly high regard as my dad used to own one, and i can still remember the excitement on his face when he parked it on the drive for the first time, sure it wasn’t the best car in the world, though this is mainly down to the fact that my dad’s was a second hand BMW 8 Series, and the owner prior to my father wasn’t exactly the type to take care of his things.
I can only assume BMW discontinued production off the BMW 8 Series because there wasn’t enough demand for a car like that, but these days things are different, these days people aren’t as concerned with the practicality of cars and there is a market out there for everything. If there’s a market for the Citroen Nemo Multispace, there must be a market for a beaut like the 8 Series!? Surely!
If you take a look at Mercedes and what they have done over the last 12 months, you may get the impression that bringing the 8 Series may not be such a bad idea. For Mercedes released a very similar car last year which was actually a replacement for the CL-Class…. the S-Class. It is a two door, grand touring coupe with a twin turbo V8 engine and I remember being immediately reminded of my old man’s second hand 8 Series when I saw it. Whats more, the Mercedes S Class has sold well since it became available so it would make sense for BMW to create I rival for the S-Class, especially seeing as they compete with Mercedes everywhere else.
So come on BMW, bring the 8 Series back!
With everyday that goes by it seems to be getting colder and colder, the threat of snow and icy roads is ever present and that is reflecting in what people are looking for when it comes to buying a new car. I mean it’s a pretty obvious move, you don’t exactly look out the window during the English winter and think, ‘hmmm, this country screams out for a Smart City-Cabriolet.’ Rather unsurprisingly then, people have been searching a lot for more winter friendly vehicles in the 4×4 category.
Motors have recently printed some statistics regarding what people have been searching for on their classified advertising site and it actually made for a pretty interesting read, especially if you are new to the world of used car trading, it is certainly an eye opener in to what you should be stocking and when. Apparently the car that was in highest demand over the last few weeks was the Nissan Qashqai, which makes sense as it isn’t too expensive and is there for more accessible to people than say a Land Rover. Having said that the Land Rover Freelander was the second most searched for car on the Motors website, seeing a 38% increase on what it would usually get. The car that saw the greatest increase in search terms was actually the second hand Mazda CX-5, searches for the Mazda CX-5 actually double, and them some.
Andy Coulthurst, managing director of Motors.co.uk, said the following:
“Forecasters predict that we have more bad weather on the way and dealers should be on the hunt for SUV stock that can be prepped, imaged and advertised quickly to meet consumer demand. Of course, this should be balanced with existing market intelligence which shows the type of vehicles in demand in the local area to ensure dealers are not left holding a depth of stock in one particular model at prices which are sure to be commanding premiums in the wholesale market.”
